Alcindo Soares is an athlete. He’s also a construction worker from Cape Verde who, after continually seeing trash wash up on the shores of his beach, decided to do something about it. I don’t just mean that he threw it away, either. Alcindo Soares did something miraculous. He built a gym.
Great Big Story shares his journey in the video below. It’s quite lovely and gives some insight and perspective as to what can be repurposed and how. Watch as Alcindo creatively turns one man’s trash into another man’s treasure.
Taking pride in our work and endeavors is so important. We sometimes forget, though, that taking pride in our communities and our surrounding natural environments is just as crucial. Alcindo Soares embodies this pride universally and expresses it through his work and by giving back to his community. It doesn’t cost any money to make a difference, only time and energy are required.
It’s easy to forget how important it is to keep things clean. Picking up after ourselves isn’t a difficult task, one need only to be mindful of it. We can all make a difference on this planet, for better or for worse. Choose to have a positive impact!
